As per AS2890.1:2004. A study has been made of the significant characteristics of all sedans, station wagons and light commercial vehicles that operate on Australian roads. The light commercial vehicle category was included because it contained a significant number of 4-wheel drive vehicles that are used primarily as passenger vehicles. Most other (but not all) light commercial vehicles that were included in the data, such as Ute’s and most vans would still make regular use of car parking facilities.

Firstly, vehicle sales data for the year 2000 were analysed and the individual models ranked in order of vehicle length. This enabled the 85th percentile vehicles (B85) and a small number of vehicles which could constitute the 99.8th percentile vehicles (B99) to be identified.

Updates: 2004 to 2023

The current version of the Australian Standard for Off-street car parking is still AS2890.1:2004. While it is currently being reviewed, the latest draft standard is designated as (Draft) AS2890.1:2023. This is the draft version, which is still under review. It includes proposed changes to address evolving vehicle sizes and user needs. Such increasing demands for larger parking spaces, particularly for SUVs on Australian streets. The consideration is to increase parking space lengths from 5.4 meters to 5.6 meters and addressing the needs of vehicles with rear access modifications.
